It’s no lie that reading is a huge thing in our house. I’ve been reading since early primary school; I was always way ahead of my age so I ended up having to read newspapers for my reading homework. My mum and nan always encouraged me to read and shared their love of reading, so it’s only right that I’m gonna pass that on to my little one(s). Bear already has a 3 shelf bookcase absolutely full of books. Kid has more books than me & he’s not even 1 yet…what happened there?!
Moving on… For Christmas, I noticed this book in my local Tesco Extra store. Being a lover of the Footloose movie (and all other rat pack, 80’s teen themed movies, like who doesn’t love the Breakfast Club?!) I had to pick it up and inspect, and boy was I glad! It’s a hardback book and even includes a CD of the Footloose song (now, I genuinely thought it was the ACTUAL Footloose song…I’ll explain a little more on this later). It was the perfect gift! So, off I popped to wrap it up, ridiculously excited for him to open it on Christmas Day. Here is the book;
The book centers around a zoo that comes to life once the zookeeper closes. He checks his star map and sees that a full moon is coming! All of the animals; the monkeys, giraffes, elephants, wolves, llamas, kangaroos, tigers and any animal you would expect to be at a zoo, all come to life, dancing and jiving all night long. The words in the book are lyrics to one of the songs on the disc, they’re sung to the tune of footloose and honestly, it’s the funniest thing!
As bear is only 11 months old, we don’t necessarily play the music to the book. We tend to sit and read as we usually would, however, I can’t help but sing it to him. He especially loves the page with Luke the cat on. Of course though, we play the music and dance around like crazy people to it.
The CD has 2 tracks actually. The first, is obviously the Footloose song…well, the animals version. The second, is called Monkey Town Medley, which is another really upbeat, jazzy style song. Both are sung by Kenny Loggins too, who we all love for the original Footloose song, so you’ll be sure to be tapping your feet at least!
We really love the illustrations in the book too! They look professionally hand drawn (if that’s even a thing). The characters are really cute and their appearances really reflect their personalities (for example, with the phrase “rockin’ the chimpanzees”, the monkeys are all dressed in a very ‘alternative’ style if you like).
We actually really love this book, and there are so many ways we can enjoy it together, or I can just pop the CD in the player and I’ll find bear bopping to it or trying to sing along in the middle of playing and crawling to whatever he knows he shouldn’t be touching. And we all know, our lovely little children LOVE to have songs on repeat, especially in the car; but I wouldn’t mind having to drive with this on repeat at all.
We picked this book up from Tesco, however, you can also get it from Amazon.
